Easter – not just bunnies and eggs

We had a really nice Easter. It was a relaxing few days and we even managed to get to church.

PomlazkaOn Monday I participated in the traditional Czech Easter tradition. This involves making a stick called a pomlazka by plating together some new willow shoots. Then on the morning of Easter Monday, you set off around the village with your pomlazky to visit the local women folk, to whom you administer a (not too hard) beating about the bum.

In return, the woman benefits from being made healthy and younger through the transference of new spring energy from the willow to her.

In return the women give you an egg (either chocolate or hand painted) and a shot of something strong.

So anyway, we started at about 08.30. By 12.00 (when you have to finish) we had administered a lot of healthiness and had enjoyed a lot of shots. The only problem was that people don’t coordinate their choice of drinks, so we’d had some vodka, some slivovice, some rum, some home made blackcurrant liqueur, etc etc etc. It made for quite a quiet afternoon.
